Qualcomm working with 18 mobile makers to release 5G devices by 2019; Samsung, Apple not among them

Qualcomm which is one of the companies at the forefront of the 5G movement announced on Thursday that Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem family will be used by a number of mobile manufacturers for their devices launching in 2019.

The manufacturers which feature in the list include Asus, Nokia, Oppo, HTC, Xiaomi, Vivo and Sony among others. In total there are 18 manufacturers on board. However, the list misses two of the biggest phone manufacturers in the world: Apple and Samsung.

Samsung and Apple both use Qualcomm modem in some of their devices. The absence indicates that Samsung could be hinting at its decision to do away with Qualcomm modems altogether and use its own Exynos chipset from this year onwards. Incidentally, the South Korean company is involved in a legal battle with Qualcomm.
